The Eastport Pirate Festival is seeking entrants from Maine, New Brunswick and beyond for the Second Annual International Lobster Boat Race to be held in the waters off Eastport on Sunday, September 11 as part of the 6th Annual Eastport Pirate Festival.
Attorney Charles Moore of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Perry, Maine is once again heading up the Pirate Lobster Boat Race Committee. Other committee members are Troy Alley, Keithe Moore, Mike Morse, Chris Gardner, Anthony Giard, Melissa Newcomb and John Miller. The committee is recruiting Lobster Boats from the waters of Maine, New Brunswick and beyond. This is an open race and anyone can enter.
"We are delighted to be able to announce that top contender of the Lobster Boat Race Circuit in Maine will be returning this year," says Charles Moore. "Galen Alley of Jonesport will be back with his lobster boat that holds the top speed records on the Coast of Main at over 70MPH. Alley should draw thousands by land and sea. The Eastport Pirate Festival is a celebration of our Maritime Heritage. The Eastport Pirate Festival Lobster Boat Races showcase and honor the hard working men and women that earn their living on these waters here in Maine and New Brunswick. "
Lobster Boat racing started in Jonesport in the 1960's. It has a strong following just like NASCAR. Races attract thousands of spectators that come for the day and spend lots of money - infusing the local economy with new dollars. The biggest crowds are drawn to see the stars of the Circuit along with the loudest and fastest boats. The Alley's of Jonesport certainly have that star power. The committee is actively seeking participation of the other top names in Lobster Boat Racing as well as every fisherman and every working boat on the Coast of Maine, New Brunswick and the islands off-shore to participate. They will even have a couple of race categories for pleasure boats and speed boats.
"Being the only International Lobster Boat Race will certainly provide the Amuse-bouche to provide tremendous drawing power on both sides of the border," says Festival co-chairman Ross Furman. Last year it was certainly the big notch-up that we have been able to offer annually in the process of growing the Eastport Pirate Festival into what has become one of the marquee events of summer on The Coasts of Maine and the Atlantic Maritimes in just six short years."
The Eastport Pirate Festival Lobster Boat Race will have multiple categories for Race Day on Sunday, September 12th. Every Boat that enters will have a shot at the $1000.00 Grand Prize. Each race category will offer a prize of either cash or product and all entrants will go into the drawing for the $1000.00. The grand finale will be for the title of Fastest Boat In The World to be determined in the USA vs. Canada Race. That race also comes with a $1000 cash prize. The Race Committee is seeking working boats of all kinds, as well as pleasure boats.
New this year will be the Eastport Vs. Lubec Race and the Campobello, New Brunswick Vs. deer Island, New Brunswick races with a prize purse of $500 each to the fastest boat.
The 10 sanctioned races on the Coast of Maine have as many 35 races in a day in as many categories. The Eastport Pirate Festival Lobster Boat Race will have about 12 race categories to cover all boats that enter. There is a $20.00 entry fee.
The Lobster Boat Race Committee is recruiting volunteers to help from both the USA and Canada. Interested persons can call Michael Morse at 207 -853-4773.
